I've Got Jewelry - How About You?

Yes, this is how this little tax jewel often feels like.

This was an email forward I received. I did not write it and I'm not sure of the author. I posted it over in the forums but thought some blog readers might like to see it.

TAX POEM
This is too true to be very funny:

"Tax his land,
Tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirts,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think

Tax his booze,
Tax his beers,
If he cries,
Tax his tears.

Tax his bills,
Tax his gas,
Tax his notes,
Tax his cash.

Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers,
Tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.

Tax his coffin, Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"

And when he's gone,
We won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance TAX !!

I'm not a fan of taxes for the most part, but some of them do make sense. As for the list you have, many taxes didn't exist 100 years ago because what they taxed didn't exist 100 years ago, or had just started. Just like the interent isn't taxed (yet), 100 years ago practially no one used gasoline, telephones, vehicles (other than buggies), utilities, watercraft (almost 100% of water crafts were for business), CDL, recreational vehicles. There would have been no easy way to tax many of these things if they tried back then.

And over 100 years ago you did have toll roads in the place of road usage tax (aka turnpike), property tax (back to the 1600's even), and inheritance tax (done by the states). And would you want unlimited hunting and fishing today? Many species would be hunted to near extinction without some controls. Besides controlling how many of an animal is killed, license fees are used to fund wildlife management. And sales taxes have been around forever. What do you think the Boston Tea Party was about? Taxes.

Sorry to be a downer on this, but taxes aren't new. I will admit some places they are getting ingenious and over the top in what all they tax, but truly its nothing new.

I agree in part. As noted above I did not write the post. No taxes are not new, but the increasing number of them does get burdensome!

We in our state and city are quite heavily taxed for lots of things...and The Hubster and I vent often about having to be taxed for community projects that we never partake of. Yes, we could, but we're so doggone busy working trying to meet the ends together at the end of the month -so we can pay those taxes you know and EAT - that we don't ever have the time nor the inclination to use some of these facilities. Many of which are museum type organizations or event locations that should be able to stand on their own two feet financially wise or be done without!
