It's that time again kiddos - go Whack the Moles - the ones stealing your $$'s by eating thru the electrical budget. Don't know what I'm talking about? Go check out the backstory here:

Today, all there was on my sweep thru the house was the hairdryer and microwave. We've been doing better with this lately.

Lux-it is funny you bring this up as I was just last night running through the house, at my wits end with all the lights on. We have smallish kids (10 and 4) and they leave lights on everywhere. So this morning we started a new item for out "morning routine". Everyone has to go through the house and turn off lights, radio, and fans. I am in charge of electrical power strips. They have kinda made a game of it, seeing how fast they can do it, and it helps that we are generally running late Smile

Ya know, Lux, I have taken your advice to heart. I dug out all the old power strips from the basement, and plugged them in to the appliances like coffeemaker with clock, computer and peripherals, tv, etc.

It's amazing. Turning things completely off at the power source when not in use does make a huge difference. This month, the electric bill was only $10! It's usually around $45. So I guess it's true that 70% of our electric usage is due to phantom loads.

Thanks for the constant reminders. I feel great about the savings in dollars and greenhouse emissions.
