16.63 LOVE MY SCRATCH & DENT stores! This is one of two close enough to my house to visit rather regularly!

This was budgeted grocery money, so I do consider this an unofficial no-spend day as I spent no other money besides my budgeted funds.

I never know what the discounted items will be. Sometimes when I get to the car I'll send the boys back in for more, but today I didn't have time.

The boys were supposed to go to a company party/seminar/pep rally type deally-who this afternoon and I took them and no sooner got home than they called for me to pick them back up as it had been postponed. Uaghhhh!!!

I hung up and headed towards the door and then decided why not give a shot at getting a freebie out of this deal? I hit redial and told CashHappySon to get me an ice-cream out of the deal since they had failed to call and let them know not to show up today on their normal day off.

When I got there...free ice-cream!! Ta-da!! I made a vow when I started blogging here not to BUY any ice-cream until 2007, but I never said I wouldn't eat any of the free stuff!

A scratch and dent shop. - hmm. I've never heard of these. Are they a chain? How does one go about locating one of those.

The level of savings is inspiring and Its always fun to ask my boyfriend to take me shopping *grin*.

No, not a chain that I know of. Although one of the ones I shop at does have another store in a town about an hour away. I go there too as it is the town my Dad still lives in and when I go to visit I usually take time to shop there as it is generally well worth the time.

Watch while in the grocery store. Some stores have a cart/shelf area that has their scratch&dents. Other stores will have someone doing a closeout of a particular product, or the manufacturer will be there pulling stuff off the shelf. The scratch & dents are usually where this stuff ends up...if not in the reps pantry itself.

How does one locate one? I don't really know how...I just stumble upon them really. But have been shopping at various ones for about 15 years now...when one goes out another one soon pops up somewhere in the area. Biglots is one example. But the ones I go to are better in price than BigLots. If I were you I'd look in the phone book under Salvage or Closeouts??? Something like that.

The ones I shop generally have everything from clothing to furniture to appliances to groceries. When you shop them you take what you can find when you find it, because it's not likely to be there when you shop again. In other words they aren't consistent in stock. One month they'll have 4000 bottles of ketchup and next month not a bottle of ketchup to be found.

Last time I was there I got that precooked bacon in cases for $10 a case, which had 16 pkgs to a case = .62 pkg. Very convienient, but I'm not willing to pay $2.95 for it in my regular grocer where the same amount would of cost me 47.20! I bought four cases! Surprise, they had no bacon when I was there yesterday. I looked and asked both! When you shop these places watch the dates. Some of it expired, some close to expiring, but loads of stuff still has long shelf life in it! Use your own judgement as to what you're comfortable with.

This url will kind of explain how the stores get their stuff. Maybe this place can tell you how to locate places that sell this way?

Good luck! I hope you find one. If I was looking I'd find the largest family I could and ask that Mom where she finds her best bargains...she's likely to know of a good scratch & dent store.

When I was a kid, Pathmark used to have scratch and dent bins in the back of the store. My mom was the QUEEN of scratch and dent. (And forget it if you could find the generic store brand scratch and dent - that was like a double bonus!). I don't see them in stores today, though. Thanks for bringing back such a great memory!

mjrube94 - oh yeah my mom too! Only back in the day they even had the mysterious 'no label cans'. You opened it and hoped it was something recognizable AND what you wanted to eat!! Big Grin
